Why is Mattress Mack allowed to take bets?

oh yes it is. He is making a cut and booking games from a customer. The customer has paid for the mattress and has the mattress/furniture . If team loses you lose nothing. If team wins you get a credit back for the purchase price of your mattress/furniture that you already own. So you just won an equivalent cash prize. No different than draft kings promo bets of money back if it loses on certain games. How did he make his cut? The difference of manufacturing price to selling price.

Penal Code 47.03 creates an offense for gambling promotion. That is, it is an offense to knowingly “operate or participate in the earnings of a gambling place,” “engage in bookmaking,” or even “become a custodian of anything of value” related to a bet.

I know him and his wife. I belong to their country club. What’s your point? He started the business promotions back in the 80s, the same time he had a drug addiction. He recovered, made good on his business when he was on his last dime and turned his life around. The man is a living saint. He has helped so many people here in Houston. He has opened his stores up to homeless people. You won’t find one person with a negative word about the man but here you are casting aspersions???

Humans are easily manipulated and mostly have no clue what’s happening on the back end in marketing schemes. I deal with a lot of insured sweepstakes and contests in my business and the new “revenue” always offsets any potential consumer win and the cost of insurance for the “potential” win. Often- the grand prize never even happens.

No… you first asked if we knew him and then you said how do we know he’s not dumb enough to be doing these promotions illegally. I just told you I know him. Do you not think he has lawyers and accountants to keep the books straight? We had a casino night last Friday with full casino tables. How does he do it? Why isn’t he in jail? You are trying very hard to put the man down. You bring up a coke addiction in the 80s to prove your point? A lot of folks did coke in the 80s. Relax.

He is doing exactly what banks and insurance companies do. Cover their asses. Businesses have given away money in sweepstakes and promotions sine the 1700s. It is not illegal because real tangible goods are exchanged for money. If he was just taking money, you would have a point.

Mattress Mac and his cronies were the initial investors of Sam Houston. Once they got it alpproved the race commissioner was killed. Mattress Mac and his buddies lost the track. He isn’t allowed to own a race horse. It is now owned by the wise guys. He has tried to buy race horses but I think he is barred. Guy is a class act. Does a lot with our homeless. When Katrina hit he gave out a shit load of free furniture.q
