It was 1995ish and Hotmail had just launched and I was trying to find a username. I was trying my name and then all sorts of words of things I could see around me like keyboard, monitor, flowerpot and nothing worked. So I started copy/pasting random words off the page. Next to one of the boxes on the signup form it said *Optional and that's where it came from.

I wish it had some meaningful history, like meaning "Everything is a choice. No rules. All optional" but sadly it was just a newb issue


It then turned out to be a word not many people used as a username so I could get it just about everywhere I joined something for quite a few years. Which made it stick. People started calling me Opti in real life and could not change it after that.

The true meaning is simply because I'm a supporter of Arsenal football club here in England. The nickname stems from the club's old 'firm' (a hooligan group back in the 1970s; see the movie Green Street for more on hooliganism), and Arsenal's firm was known as the Goon Squad.
