CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Ahead of Friday night's Mega Millions drawing for the third-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history, a Harvard University statistician shared a strategy that he says is "guaranteed" to bring home the jackpot — if you've got the time and money to pull it off.

Professor Mark Glickman's strategy is based on the fact that the Mega Millions machine picks five white balls and one golden one in each drawing. That means there's a limited number of combinations: 302,575,350.

Some players play special, "lucky" numbers and others like to spread their money around, but Glickman says there's only one way to be certain you have a winning ticket: Buy every possible combination.

At a price of $2 per ticket, playing every possible number would require an initial investment of $605,150,700. (Not to mention the time required to complete more than 302 million ticket slips.)

But Friday's jackpot is worth more than $1.2 billion. On the surface, that looks like a profit of more than $675 million.

"So it seems like that's a great strategy, right? Because you're paying less money to get this payoff at the end of $1 billion," Glickman said. "The problem though is that other people might be trying the same thing."

In other words, splitting the jackpot with another winner would turn this profitable investment into a major loss.

The other potential wrinkles are taxes collected on the winnings and the fact that getting the full amount of the jackpot requires selecting a 30-year annuity.

However, if nobody wins Friday and the jackpot continues to grow, the odds of his plan yielding a profit would increase.

"Then, all of a sudden, this strategy of buying every single lottery ticket starts to become a lot more attractive," he said.
