    Aussie Rules Football Discussion
Anyone have success with this league?

I enjoy watching just don't know enough about the teams, rules, etc. I've been hitting nice scores on alternate spreads pure luck as I know nothing about this league.

          No need to watch anything

A pro gambler never ever watches games that’s for the squares and fans

I thought this thread was about discussing the rules.

Can anyone post a short summary of the rules?

Like is this game closer to rugby or american football?

So why is it called Aussie Rules Football? Wouldn't they just call it Aussie Football? I'm confused.

Well if it's a version of rugby why is it called football? I promise this is the last question.

                      Aussies are backwards people

                      They play songs from
                      80’s and 90’s way behind

They recreated Rugby to be like football

It's nothing like rugby or gridiron.

                          Closest thing is Gaelic football.

It's played on an oval, not square, field that is 150 to 200 yards long.

You can't throw the ball and must immediately let it go if tackled.

You can only tackle around the torso.

It's weird and has lots of rules a new person would ever work out from watching.

                          Teams
There are 22 players a side.
                          18 players on the field
3 players on interchange with 1 substitute.

                          Game time
                          Game goes for 4 quarters.
20 minutes a quarter, with the clock stopping when the ball is out of play.

                          Scoring
6 points for a GOAL and 1 point for a BEHIND
Goal; kicked through the middle posts
Behind; kicked through the side posts, hits the middle posts or rushed through the posts

Umpires: there are 4 on field umpires, 2 boundary umpires and 2 goal umpires

                          10 MUST KNOW RULES
1.When a player catches a kick greater than 15 metres it’s called a ‘mark’ and results in a free kick.
2.Player can only pass the ball with their hands using a handball – punching the ball from one hand with the alternate fist.
3.Tackling must be lower than the shoulders and higher than the waist.
4.If a player is tackled with the football and has had chance for prior disposal that’s ‘holding the ball’ and it’s a free kick to the other team.
5.If the ball goes out of bounds it’s a throw in.
6.If the ball is kicked out of bounds on the full it’s a free kick to the other team.
7.When a goal is scored the ball is returned to middle for the centre bounce and the two ruckman tap for it.
8.When a player is running with the ball they have to bounce every 15 metres.
9.A player can shepherd another player using their body if they’re within 5 metres of the ball.
10.Free kick is awarded against a player if they: throw, trip, push in the back, hold the man, run too far, hold the ball, high tackle, kick in danger or kick out on the full.

                          .

Thanks Optional. I would love to watch a game just to get familiar with the rules. It would be fun.

Is it played in any other country besides Australia or New Zealand?

Only in Australia really. Although there is a US league https://usafl.com/

It used to be on Fox Soccer+ in USA but tv deal seems to have ended.

If you want to pay to stream it there is watchafl.com.au but it isn't cheap.

If you can find an Aussie VPN you can watch it here free https://7plus.com.au/live-tv?channel-id=ThisWeekon7AFL

Sorry biggie for hijacking the thread but I can't really bet or discuss a game I don't understand the rules. Obviously it's like every other sport..whoever scores the most points wins but you got to know what you are betting for.

Those hits are nasty. Do you have a video of an actual game? Looks like soccer except you can use your hands. Every clip from your video someone was kicking the ball like a soccer goalie and the others were trying to catch it in the air instead of using their heads to head the ball like soccer.

I'd bet is fun to watch. Need to find a game to watch from start to finish. Maybe all you got to do is watch the numbers like jjgold says. No need to know who is going to win.

I do see alot of parity so dogs are usually good bets. I havent followed much tho.

I dont really know how rugby is played but I guess if optional says it's nothing like rugby guess I'm.wrong there lol

The amount of running is crazy. The NFL dudes are used to running sprints, these dudes look like they run for 20 minutes straight. The NFL guys would get smoked.

that sounds about right more like CFL and u can only kick fieldgoals for 6 pts missed fg between secondary poles 1 pt.

Thanks for the video. I think it looks more similar to soccer than rugby. Lots of running and kicking the ball up in the air for some reason I still don't understand. Looks like they are trying to punt the ball before they get tackled.
