Good insight, John. Think it's just that the horse-racing game has pretty small margins.

Think about how many man-hours go into prep for running a race. That's before the upkeep of the grounds and paying for horses/feed. You pay a winner's share. You take some $$ out of the betting pool.

Yes, horse-betting is one of the worst investments imaginable. Depending on the state, 18% of the parimutuel pool $ is sucked out before you have a chance to re-coup it. Just so hard to clear a profit after that robbery.

Zippy chippy 30 dies. Goes out a 0-100 loser. Never won a race. Started in the mid 90's raced until he was 13. Started at Belmont raced at Finger lakes a lot. Poor horse. Died a loser.

I was surprised that the uk books did not bring fixed odds betting with them when they got into the mix with US sportsbooks. I cannot bet into US pools and make money, I can however make money betting fixed odds using uk books on USA horse racing.
