Its a blow out when the losing team capitulates and puts in all the backups, or just starts to work on certain aspects of their overall game. So sure the Giants today might lose by 17 points, but if they are down by 17 and start doing stuff like running sweeps with certain personnel, then you know it was a blowout.

It all depends on the spread.

If a team is favored by 14 points to win and they win by 21 points it is not a blowout.

If a team is favorite by 2 points and they win by 21 points it is a blowout.

So it is not the final score that determines the blowout but a combination of the spread and final score.
