The idea that he would only get 180 days house arrest and 2 years probation for being a knife welding maniac is preposterous. It's very likely that the defense was claiming self defense and that the old guy had done something that led the prosecution to accept a plea deal.

They prosecution doesn't have to accept a deal, but they knew they weren't going to win this case or at least had a good shot at losing. They feigned fake outrage at the sentence for good looks. This has nothing to do with black or white privilege. It's all about monetary privilege.
