Yates used to be a sports dynasty in Houston. They were the first black HS to win a Texas football title in the UIL. They had some of the best basketball teams in the country for the last decade. They won like 5 titles in 7 years. One year, I think 2011 they were blowing teams out by 90+ points, was ranked #1 in the country and dominated to a title. The year before I saw them lose a 9 point lead with a minute left against rival Wheatley. Those kids were heartbroken but came back that next year and killed everyone. They had to move games to the Merrell Center because they had crowds close to 25k. That school put out a shit load of NFL and NBA players. Many years ago before Yates entered the UIL, the Yates/Wheatley football game was held during Thanksgiving and that game used to have over 35,000 people. It was one of the largest HS games in the country. You won't find too many HS with the athletic success of Yates. Unfortunately for them, most of the inner city kids are now being bused, recruited by the well off schools in the suburbs.

George Floyd was a very good TE and a quality PF basketball player. A lot of people in 3rd ward knew him for his sports accomplishments. He had a lot of football and basketball scholarship offers. He probably should have stuck with football.
