ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Former NFL player Keith McCants was found dead Thursday at his home in Florida after a suspected drug overdose, investigators said. He was 53.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said in an email that deputies were called to a St. Petersburg home at about 5:10 a.m. Thursday. McCants was dead inside the house, where others who made the 911 call also apparently lived.

McCants also had financial troubles, detailed in 2012 in an ESPN documentary titled "Broke," about former professional players who went through bankruptcy and other money difficulties.

Which is peanuts when you think that has to last you a lifetime. He was a top 5 pick (maybe 3rd or 4th??), didn't play long in the NFL like most. All downhill from there.

Edit: Is that all he made? Seemed like he would have made a bit more? Once you pay your agent and your taxes, you are not as well off as people think.

The guy was a hell of an athlete. Could hoop with the best of the Tide basketball players too. Probably still the highest drafted Tide players the last 40+ years. If only they had let him play LB in the NFL instead of moving him directly to DL, probably would have had a Jr Seau type career if he just played the position he has always played.
