People should only be betting on the early rounds of the English League Cup, (known to fans as the Mickey Mouse cup), if they want skin in the game when they watch. Generally fans have no idea what strength team the managers will put out. These are little more than friendlies.

(Sighs). It's not line-ups, it's intent. If a team isn't going to be challenging for promotion or struggling to avoid relegation then they might be interested in a cup run. Some players will be looking to impress for various reasons but most don't want to be out there. There's nothing in it for them and they don't want to get hurt. It was back-ups vs back-ups and if you had to bet the smart play would have been to have backed the team that needed some confidence and wanted to show their fans they weren't going to roll over in the Premier league after starting out with 0 goals scored and 8 goals conceded in 2 games. However, that could just as easily have backfired.

Early rounds in this competition are a crap shoot, especially with a Premier League team against lower opposition. The only time it isn't is when it's 2 local teams or there's a history of bad blood between the clubs.

NB: home field can mean more than usual because mid-week travelling for smaller clubs is a bitch.
