I don't think it was well known. There is NO WAY it is any sort of an advantage - balance and pushing off of your back foot are keys.

Never heard that before. It's not an "advantage" but it keeps his swing more compact and keeps him from overswinging. It might cost him some distance but improves his accuracy.
