MLB To Crack Down On Pitchers’ Use Of Foreign Substances
It's not cheating if you don't get caught.

Of course, foreign substance usage has become prevalent because of its performance-enhancing effects. Using a tacky substance to improve one’s grip on the ball correlates with increases in spin rate and accompanying pitch movements.

Last week, umpire Joe West confiscated the hat of Cardinals reliever Giovanny Gallegos as he entered the game, after making the determination that an illegal substance had been applied to the brim. Gallegos was not ejected, but Cardinals manager Mike Shildt was thrown out after voicing his displeasure.

They seem to be hell bent on shortening the game, that ought to do it.

If the played 50 or 60 doubleheaders per season then they could be done before Halloween.

Or instead how about they emphasize teaching young players to hit again instead of always swinging for the fences.

Hence the probable reason pitchers are having more success these days.

Idk man. I’ve seen some movement on pitches in the last few weeks that it wouldn’t matter the approach at the plate, nearly impossible to even make contact on some of the nasty hooks I’ve seen lately.

Eidolon I agree with wire. Baseball games are way too long sometimes. Saw way too many 4 hour games or close to 4 hour games over the past few years. Even when you win it takes it out of ya.

Either way I probably still wouldn't watch that often, just not a big baseball guy anymore, (Pirates fan )but I believe in the long run cutting games to 7 innings i think would benefit MLB, just my opinion.

Dodgers’ Dave Roberts doesn’t think pitchers who use sticky stuff are cheating

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts doesn’t think pitchers are cheating until the rule is enforced.

Roberts says that until MLB more actively enforces the rule against using foreign substances to enhance grips, players are going to push the limits in pursuit of a competitive advantage.

Roberts has said previously that pitchers are motivated to push the rules by using sticky substances to improve their grip on the ball “because it’s proven to be effective, because it’s proven to improve spin and velocity and miss bats.”

Roberts said there has been “chatter” around the topic because of the increased focus on the issue but he has not addressed the team – or the pitching staff, in particular – about it. And, he hasn’t tried to find out which of his pitchers might be offenders.

It's not cheating until you get caught.

Referees receive pre-match scout reports on pitchers using foreign substances

Foreign body crackdown is approaching MLB and is coming soon. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, it could happen soon next Monday. This is wild, given that no details have been provided about the major changes.

Earlier this week, Olney said MLB plans to involve referees deeply in cracking down on the process. This includes 8 to 10 checks per game if both fielders and pitchers seem appropriate.

Baseball has always given a wink and a nod to cheating. Don Sutton is a Hall of Famer that bragged about cheating. Gaylord Perry won 300 games and was famous for his spitball. I can remember the Houston Astros using sandpaper on baseballs back in the 80s and it was talked about openly.

After the steroid scandal and the Astros, the league is a little more sensitive about such things.

Meanwhile, the league juices the baseball to get more home runs.

MLB is seeing low across the league batting averages and not the scores they want.

They are trying to figure out why as they usually have pretty tight control over this.

They are losing control, and it's in a negative, non offense, non scoring, non batter performance way.

That is no the MLB front office's idea of a successful MLB league.

When the checks reveal nothing, expect that ball to get juiced again next year.

Brian “Bubba” Harkins, who was fired in 2020 for providing sticky foreign substances to MLB pitcher, revealed that he supplied a mixture of rosin and pine tar to Yankees pitcher Corey Kluber.

Kluber’s agent denied the claims saying Harkins never personally gave anything of the sort to Kluber nor has he ever used any substance prepared by Harkins in an MLB game. [emphasis added]

Harkins had previously said he provided the same substance to Yankees All-Star pitcher Gerrit Cole.

Has to be the dumbest player in baseball. Just hurt his team bad, as Mariners play a man short for 10-days
