I wonder how they got them this low so fast. The fees were out of control as recently as June 2021.

It's in the design. It couldn't go on like this forever. If Chinese miners wouldn't resume normal activity and get the hash rate back up, someone else would fill the void (invest and start mining on a large scale).

This is how bitcoin was meant to be.
