White Sox rookie catcher Mercedes says he’s leaving baseball (yahoo.com)

He flew too close to the sun.

              Or too close to Larussa.

he was hitting pretty good down at AAA after his MLB slump

                    i'm betting on 1 of 2 things.

                    1) he's just a mental/emotional midget and he crumpled under combined with not getting along with Larussa

                    2) he's is trying an end around manuever to get out of contractual obligation to White Sox, similar to what Raul Mondesi did to the Pirates a few decades back

No way he's just quitting. He'll try again next season when he realizes that he doesn't have any other source of income.

didn't know he still had the longest HR

On April 4, 2021, he set a major league record as the first baseball player in modern MLB history to begin a season with eight consecutive hits. He has also hit the longest home run of the 2021 MLB season to date, a 485-foot (148 m) home run against the Kansas City Royals on April 8, 2021.[2]

After they told him that the checks he wrote will bounce if they don't pay him anymore he changed his mind.
