The Jets have fired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.
Clearly this is the result of Williams sending an all out blitz on the deciding play of yesterday’s loss to the Raiders. With less than ten seconds left in the game, Derek Carr hit Henry Ruggs for a 46 yards touchdown to win the game for Las Vegas. Undrafted rookie Lamar Jackson was left on an island with Ruggs.
In one sense it is difficult to argue with this move. Williams’ call was egregious, and his unit has been a disaster all season. You might give him a pass for being short on talent, but there has been a clear lack of discipline. Williams has also been slow to adjust to take away what the opposition does best.
In another sense it seems kind of ridiculous that Williams is the first to go. While his job performance merited a dismissal, the performances of Adam Gase and Dowell Loggains have been even worse over the last two years. I don’t have any problem with Williams going. I have a real problem with Gase and Loggains not going out the door first.
That’s the way it is with the Jets, however. There’s accountability for everybody except Adam Gase and his friends. It’s what helped get the team to this spot.
