I went with a fade myself strategy in the football pick 6 contest last year. I only did NFL, I would just go down the line and jot down my first instinct to each matchup and note the strength of that instinct. Then I would pick opposite my 6 strongest feelings.

I was kind of picking the side that if I was following someone else's picks, it would be the picks I would most cringe at forcing myself to play. More often than not, it was bad teams on the road against tough opponents, or cold teams, or teams coming off embarassing losses. Not sure where I can look it up, but I think I hit more than 55%.
