Just a reminder when betting NHL playoffs...
"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard"

The more talented win does not always win and there are always upsets.

Think twice before taking the better team and make sure you know the players you're taking have balls and will do whatever it takes to win.

Should be interesting, the layoff makes it harder to predict.

Just remember this quote every year before picking teams like the Lightning or Leafs to win it all.

that is exactly what most "experts" say on espn

                especially on their football analysis

"this team is going to have to go out there and score more points if they want to win this game"

Actually all hard work is some bullshit. These guys are playing to get a paycheck and not get sick at the same time. It's a numbers game. If you don't understand math don't gamble.

Doesn't this basically apply to every team sport?

Why not say "plan for the unexpected" or "Look for the team with that 'it' factor"

If you want to get into esoteric handicapping, look for teams to play well that normally have talent but get distracted because they're in a media circus or have a history of choking come playoff time.

With refs under no pressure from fans for "makeup calls", teams with tons of up front talent could woodshed others who rely on a bit more clutch and grab and grit and go bananas on a parade of penalties.

I am no fan (in fact they're pretty close to the team I hate the most) but the Leafs could be a team like that (watch them lose to the jackets now) - but they have 2 "first" lines they can roll that could prove deadly if they stay in their bubble (both literally and metaphorically in that media circus). They were at risk of not even making the playoffs earlier this year - but for a team chockablock with that much talent, in this bizarro year of cardboard fans and hosting 1/2 the games - I couldn't turn down throwing $20 on them at +2000 (betonline).

I'll bet the underdogs. There is no crowd so all the banging on the glass and cussing and throwing beer at the away team players is not going to be a weapon.

Another factor to consider. Players will be able to hear each other like they're at practice. Might not seem like much, but when calling for breakout passes, or an open look on a powerplay - without screaming fans etc, you could see a lot of special teams that resemble what the regular season overtime looks like (a lot of tic-tac-one timers etc)

Oilers proving my quote right. They thought they could just show up and win on skill alone.

Canes proved your quote as being right also. One of the hardest working bunch in the NHL and they were rewarded today.

They have skill, work hard and have a great coach. Very good combo.

Canes were favored - it's not like NY is some all euro glam team who came in thinking they were the superstars at the cracker factory.

Oilers were exposed during the regular season many times as not being nearly as fast as everyone thinks. After McDavid and Nygard (during the regular season) there was a huge drop off in speed. Chicago has speed o'plenty as evidenced in that dominating first period.

Hard to imagine Smith starting again in this round if Koskinen comes in in game 2 and even remotely looks better.
