The Major League Baseball Players Association has agreed to a plan to expand the playoffs to 16 teams for the 2020 season, sources told ESPN's Marly Rivera.
A playoff expansion still needs the final approval of MLB owners, sources said.
All second-place teams in the six divisions will qualify for the playoffs, sources said. Then the seventh and eigth teams in both leagues will be chosen by best record among other teams.
Sources said an important aspect for the players was player and family housing and access to the stadium during the playoffs.
If a 16-team format is adopted, it would include a televised postseason-seeding show in which top-seeded teams pick their first-round opponents, a source told ESPN's Buster Olney on Thursday.

Only for this 1 year. They wanna make sure the big market teams get into it. All about tv ratings. Also keep more teams in it. Imagine if say the mets started out on a bad streak and basically outta it after 25 games. They would shut down Degrom instantly. This keeps teams and players more willing to stay engaged..instead of shutting it down early

Good starting pitching from shitty teams will have a premium at trade deadline.

Get that stud starter to add to your rotation so you can go with a 4 man rotation in last month playoff drive and possibly 3 man rotation in playoffs .


I hope we see both 1 seeds knocked out in the first round of 3 game series

So no real advantage by winning your division except home field? I hate it. But of course with everybody playing only division and cross league same division opponents it kind of makes sense will make up some for really unbalanced schedules

Good. They will trim some off days in the other rounds. Half series will be Tue-Thur others Wed-Fri is my guess

The first round playoff series are all best of 3. All 3 games will be played in the higher seeded team's stadium. The division winners make up the top 3 seeds, with the best record of the 3 second place finishers taking the 4. After the first round where they chop 8 teams down to 4, then the normal Division Series round begins, followed by League Championship Series round.

Agree with you on the "trophies". Think Mlb owners signed some billion dollar deal with Turner sports. So maybe this has something to do with that? Giving Turner more playoff games this year
