Chief Illiniwek is retired but still hasn't been "replaced" which has caused controversy - They got a kingfisher bird mascot currently pending. There's also an unofficial "chief" who still appears at games. The Chief is not quite buried yet!

They were called "The Red Men" because the jerseys and shorts they wore on the court were the color red.
So back in the early days of college basketball St. John's was nicknamed "The Red Men"

Flash forward to a decade ago when the Snowflake Political Police came along and pressured the AD's and high brass at SJU to change the team name because certain Nancy Boy groups were offended by the term "Red Men"
Now St. John's is called the "Red Storm"

Sickening.
