I think it is still a loss.

It finished 3rd, but it can be like a prop so it could depend on fine print.

I did the same bet at bet 365 for a horse not to finish top two places and it was a dead heat for second place. I got half my wager back

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It's basically the "dead heat rule" but I'm not so sure everyone uses it.

What they may do is actually split your bet, then pay you accordingly.

Or in your case, split the original bet, and then collect the loss.

Sounds weird but it makes sense. We see it in golf with first round leader and top 5/top 10 type future bets.
