That stopped 8 or 9 years ago. Have to have a passport to come back from Mexico or Canada. You can walk or drive into Mexico, no problem. They literally do not check anything. Push the gate and walk in. But to come back into San Diego, you HAVE to have a valid passport. Drivers license doesn't fly anymore

Depends on how you get there. You can still drive over with an enhanced license, no passport required.
