Australia is a very pragmatic country and we already realise that we jumped on this much earlier than our other first world contemporaries probably because of our close proximity to China and our massive influx of Chinese students, etc. And that's also on the flipside why the majority of people have cracked it when it was discovered a Chinese company ordered their Aussie and Canadian based employees to basically stockpile all PPE and ship them back to China. We're all betting people obviously... I'm willing to put down $10k that my husband already had this virus back in late December/early Jan when he was told his chest infection was a new thing but don't be concerned. If I were histrionic I'd say I'd already had it too as I was sick like a mofo for weeks with some sort of shit chest thing. But the whole point of social distancing isn't for us, it's for our parents, our kids grandparents, kids who are ill, emergency responders, teachers, etc. Those who work at a supermarket or at Uber or Target or at a bank... you're all valued. Stay safe and how ironic is it that the most essential jobs (here in Australia at least) don't tend to require uni degrees. What a waste my 7 years was!!!
the irony in that is strong

i feel for the essential workers just making barely above minium wage. my neighbor's daughter got it from her job as a bookkeeper in a supermarket.

Oh gosh, so do I. I really hope they have a few of the measures in place that we have here in Australia.

I was having a bit of a cry today and my husband tried to make me smile by saying who knew that we were essential in our work? So we did a bit of a dance and kept on going. It's a pretty shit time for everyone so without sounding like Tinkerbell I'm hoping we can still be kind to each other somehow

Someone really needs to start a thread questioning the wisdom of shutting down the country when only 80,000 or so people are going to die.

I certainly hope that the plan going forward is to contain the virus without having to shut down the country. At the moment, though, it is so out of control that I don't think containment is an option, hence the current state of affairs.

I know in a super popular super market in the southern US employees weren't allowed to (or at least weren't required to) wear gloves or masks until the customers protested on behalf of employees. If my grandmother, who has worked there for 40 fkn years and only continues to work there because she needs to maintain her shares, contracts the virus, it's highly likely she got it working at the supermarket.

There's a private group already talking about a lawsuit...

It will die down Bc of all the social distancing urban areas are doing then start back up when rural areas keep it going and morons in urban or close suburbs lived their best lives and got it

At almost 2k deaths yesterday, covid-19 is now the leading cause of death in the USA, ahead of heart disease and cancer. More people died yesterday from covid-19 than cancer. Let that sink in.

We are still not doing nearly enough testing. It needs to be double what it is now to keep up.

If my grandmother, who has worked there for 40 fkn years and only continues to work there because she needs to maintain her shares, contracts the virus, it's highly likely she got it working at the supermarket.

There's a private group already talking about a lawsuit...
