If it's one gun and strictly for home defense, I'd get a 12 gauge shotgun. It's the first gun I would grab if I heard someone, i keep 5 00 buck followed by 2 3" slugs. If you plan on using it to carry as well get a good 9mm or compact .45.

if you're a total noob to guns a shotgun will be best choice, the odds of a new gun owner even hitting a moving target with a 9mm pistol (ie a home invader) with adrenaline running through your body are slim to none

Better to feel dumb and get good info from those with experience than some of he posters here. Tell them to talk to you like their kid when explaining things. You will catch on quicker than you think and you will want to learn everything about whatever you purchase.

Stick to the big brands and buy a model that's been proven in use by the military and law enforcement agencies for decades, and make sure to do your research and buy ammo that feeds reliably in them.

Last thing you want to happen is to have your self-defence gun jam up when an assailant is rushing you in the dark.

And no, you don't want an AR-15 or other high velocity gun if you want to preserve your hearing and the lives of others within the same walls.

Mossberg 500 pumps are cheap and very effective. Just use a low-brass trap load with a modified choke......can't miss and won't endanger anyone else in the house with wall penetration. Prolly still a couple hundy out the door. Grab a mec reloader and reload your hulls.
