If you dive into numbers ,Trump is in big trouble 2020. He won by razor thin margins in the states that are important.Essentially EVERY suburb is in open revolt against the Republican party. The facts are this:
1. Hillary was a horrible candidate. Very unlikable. Likely as corrupt as Trump. Easy to make the lesser of two evils argument against. The only candidate similarly unlikable this year is Warren. Even if Warren somehow becomes the nominee (only happens if Bernie drops out early for some reason) see #3 below for why it likely doesn't matter.
2. Every election since 2016 has consistently shown Republican candidates losing 5, 10, even 20 points from Trump vs Clinton margin.
3. Look at 3rd party vote counts 2016 compared to other modern elections. Those huge increases are primarily Democrats who didn't like Hilary and Republican NeverTrumpers. People "sending a message". These people feel a sense of guilt and would vote for any democrat that is nominated. See #2 as this is IMO related and responsible for the dramatic margin swings.
4. More elderly voters have passed over last 4 years and young voters have come of age. More importantly young folks have become engaged like never before.
5. Tax bill and trade wars turned some Trumpcurious voters away. They realize he is no different than those that came before him. I.e. he is not for the little guy as they had hoped.
6. Social media clamping down on certain interests. Say what you want, it had an impact. However marginal. In a race like '16, with razor thin margins where it mattered, this alone may have been enough.
Trump has a bottom of 40% due to his base. Over 51% disapprove of him consistently. Of course it will come down to the same few states, but the factors above will be his undoing. PA is gone. He needs to run the table everywhere else he won in '16. Otherwise it is over.
The bottom line is that he is not the type of candidate who picks up supporters. He slowly loses them.Comment -
