Gerrit Cole yesterday signed a nine year free agent deal.
Who is the only other pitcher in MLB history to sign a nine plus year deal?

It was Wayne Garland.
He signed a 10 year deal in late 1976.
His first season as the new Indians ‘ace’ in 1977 he lost 19 games.
Garland was so horrific that after going 28 and 48 through the first five seasons of that contract they cut and released his ass.
After his pro career he became an AAA pitching coach and then manager.
I have no idea what he’s up to today.

That was the first year of free agency in MLB
2.3 mil was HUGE back then.
Today a backup shortstop gets 2.3 million dollars every time he farts.
