Yes.

The requirements for earning a varsity letter in a sport vary by school and by sport. For example, I had a roommate who was a Div 1 football player in college and he had to play in 1/3 of the quarters played by the team for the season. If he was in 1 play for a quarter, it counted.

A high school friend played for Div 2 CFB team and earned a letter for playing in 1 game even it was 1 play. I think the school wanted to juice its lettermans numbers to make the team seem better in subsequent years.

The rules were different for basketball but I never learned what the requirement was.

Generally speaking (all are different) its 1 of the following:

Participate in 90% of 1st team practice
Participate in 50% of total games
Participate in 100% of games as manager or student assistant

This was at Macalester in MN d3 I played 2 years
