Pop up is waiting to be caught by the catcher in foul territory near a dugout. The batter is seen running to first. Why do they run???

If the catcher drops it, it's still a foul ball. Why does the batter still run to first?

Because it's not a foul ball if the catcher drops it?

It can bounce off catcher's glove and land in play.

These guys have to pretend they give a shit.

It is why Pujols still runs and touches first base after a ground out when he is still in the batters box 10 seconds after contact.

IT is the only way he can get on base. Guy could hit a roper down the line along the wall and around the corner and still get thrown out at 1st.

and it would still be foul if the ball touches the catcher is in foul territory

There is no infield fly rule if it lands in foul territory.

Two scenarios the reason they it run out
If the wind came up and could blow the ball fair, or
If the ball doesn't reach first or third base and is untouched by the fielder, there is a remote chance it could hit the ground and bounce fair

                                    That's it

I used to head straight for the dugout and sometimes be in there when it was still in the air.
