To get back on topic, there are many valid arguments that could be made that show neither man was the best at their sport

As far as icon status goes, the NBA was already wildly popular before Jordan ever came into the league
Tiger has done far more for golf than Jordan did for basketball
Without Tiger, golf purses would be half of what they are now and the global aspect of the game would be half of what it is
Jordan had way more to work with
