Preview Atlanta’s recent 1-0 loss in New York was not enough to halt their progress to a maiden MLS Cup final. Finalists in just their second year as a MLS franchise, that defeat was their first ever play-off loss within 120 minutes (W3, D1, L1), conceding just twice for a goal difference of +5 across those five matches. These two sides have met just twice in competitive football, and interestingly, neither side has registered a victory. However, Atlanta still have a lot of momentum, leading at HT/FT in each of their last six MLS games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, while also opening the scoring in them. Now the first franchise to reach the MLS Cup final from the No. 5 seed since the play-off restructure of 2011, Portland face the toughest test imaginable in their second MLS Cup final in four years. Regardless, they continue to surprise with determined and fearless football. Ahead of kick-off, Portland have won three of their last five away fixtures (W3, L2), with all games in that sequence seeing over 2.5 goals scored. A Portland tally of nine goals this play-off campaign, from four separate goal scorers, ensures that the visitors are certain to keep Atlanta’s back four busy. Players to watch: Look out for two record breakers. Firstly, Josef Martinez (Atlanta), who has smashed the MLS record for most goals in a single regular season (31). For the visitors, 2015 MLS Cup final scorer Diego Valeri became the first player of any Portland franchise to score four goals in a single play-offs campaign. Stat attack: Atlanta United have scored two or more goals in their last eight MLS home fixtures. Portland have scored more open play goals than any other club this postseason.
