I was having dinner with a sportsbook legend at a great Italian restaurant not too long ago here in CR, talking about how great it used to be down here; how epic the parties were. Big books have mostly absorbed all the little guys, and most clerk positions have been downsized due to everything going mostly online.
Anyway, the topic came round to lines and how they used to set lines back in the day. Nowadays, everybody pretty much just subscribes to a line service, except for a few that set their own lines.
How do they set their lines? Do they use complicated algorithms and fancy software?
Nope.
Group of guys sit around and use their own knowledge to come up with a line, then they hang it, and let the sharps shape what the real line should be.
When I was an outsider, I used to assume that they used math geniuses with spreadsheets and formulas to come up with lines. I was disappointed to learn that wasn't the case, at least not in this guy's book. It was pure experience.
Fascinating how the industry has changed in the 15 years I've been down here.
