Can someone explain to me why the US cares so much about chemical weapons?

To me, Death is death. The Syrian govt could have firebombed those villages, burned everyone alive, and nobody in the international world would have done anything about it. But....use chemical weapons, and suddenly that "isn't fair", and the world will punish the perpetrators.

Who is anyone to determine what are fair weapons to use in a war? The goal of any war is to win, and you use the weapons that are going to get the job done.

I just don't understand using chemical weapons as an excuse to get involved. Regardless of the weapons that you use, the end result is the same. If you don't want Assad in power, then simply say that. Support the rebels and go destroy his regime. Same thing with Saddam Hussein. Don't use the chemical weapon excuse, just say you don't want him in power and take him out.
