Because they have NOTHING to lose. Reggie Miller scored 8 points in 9 seconds, so anything is possible. If you don't foul... YOU LOSE 100% of the time. I'm fouling over and over again, stretch the game and maybe something crazy happens. In HS, we were down 15 points with 2 minutes left and we started fouling and the other team started choking. We won by 6. I don't care if someone is a 100% free throw shooter. They haven't shot free throws in an Elite 8 close out game.

Amazing finish but I question whether that last shot beat the buzzer. Guy caught the ball and dribbled before launching and the clock showed only 0.8 seconds. I'm guessing there were no reviews back then?

This was completely different. They scored 30 points in like 2 minutes. The clock barely moved. They didn't even try to steal. Just keep fouling. And Notre Dame was fouling too. Why? You don't want to stop the clock if you are ahead 10 points.
