Question On Richard Sherman's 11 Million Dollar Contract
Reports indicate Sherman will be cut/released by Seattle soon.

According to the reports... Sherman represents himself at all contract negotiations and has no agent.

Did Sherman screw up somewhere when doing the deal?

How can a team just cut you like that?

Doesn't it hurt Seattle's cap somehow? Some penalty?

    Story seems rather odd.

I don't remember any player over 10 million dollars being cut... and let go.

Followed NFL contracts at all in the last...forever? Lol in all seriousness this is pretty standard, guaranteed money and the actual $ of contract are far different and toward end of the contract most players can be cut with little penalty to the team. That's why they say don't look at an NFL players contract just look at the guaranteed money. His previous agent negotiated his current deal.

To your last line, making over 10 million a year in the last year of a deal for a 30 year old player is more likely to be the ones cut. I'd say this probably happens more often than not to non quarterbacks. Could probably come up with a dozen + in the last 5 years

More than likely Sherman wouldn't be the same player as past years. But what a huge slap in the face. Just shocking to me.

NFL is totally wired towards teams/owners. $$$ is guaranteed to owner/team before a ticket/beer is sold.
Unlike NBA/MLB, whoever has negotiated for the NFL P.A. over the years has had his ass handed to him.

Franchise tag?? P.A. thought it was going to be a great thing for the top tier players.
Now we know it is just another bonus for owners/teams.

NBA/MLB would be a far better product w/out the guaranteed contracts.

i agree how many baseball players have signed long term deals worth hundreds of millions and then declined rapidly no incentive anymore guaranteed pay

As Ans61201 already explained, NFL contracts are usually frontloaded with the guaranteed money in first couple of years of the contract. In the last year or two, team can cut a player with almost no damage to their cap space. So look at that last year or so, almost like some kind of a team option to extend.
