      It happens all the time in so cal. Typically it goes like this

      El Nino brings lots of rain which grows lots of plants and weeds that die the next year. Fires burn the overgrown area with the extra fuel and now there is nothing to hold the soil in place. Rain comes and washes it all down hill. Rinse and repeat.

      Just google La Conchita - that's about 20 miles south of where the current mudslides happened. It's like every 10 years or so that this occurs.
