When you put young people into insane situations (like war), a small percentage of the are liable to do very stupid things. My understanding is that this particular dolt thought he could somehow help the situation by meeting directly with the enemy. VERY BAD IDEA! I don't think he was purposefully being a traitor so much as a naive idiot. He was insubordinate and recklessly put others in danger. For that he will be punished.
