(Clockwise from 9pm), #4 = Pelle Lindbergh, young goalie from the Flyers.
I believe this photo is playing on the Philly = City of Champions motif. If I'm right on that, all four are sitting Conference Champions (if not league champs).
What is the date of this photo? I'm going to say something like 3/1/1981. If that's true...I BELIEVE each team participated in the most recent league Finals.
1) Erving, Sixers. Dr J was on the 1979-80 Sixers team. Lost in 6 games to the Lakers. Video showed Kareem picking up the ankle injury and missing the flight east. Magic starts at "center" and defends Dawkins. Magic plays a great floor game, Jamaal Wilkes scores 37. Magic as rookie wins title at PHI.
2) Tug McGraw, Phillies. McGraw with Rose/Schmidt/Carlton beat the Royals in 1980 World Series.
3) Ron Jaworski, Eagles. Vermeil/Jaws beat long-time rival Dallas in NFC title game. Eagles go into Super Bowl 15 as Favorite vs Raiders. Raiders came through the upset bracket as Wildcard. Key game is blustery wind game in Cleveland, where Mike Davis intercepts Sipe in endzone during dying moments of the game. Raiders win at San Diego in 1980 AFC Final, Rod Martin picks off Jaws 3x in SB. Plunkett finds Kenny King on scramble play, Raiders win 27-10.
4) (NHL is my weakest) I think that face is too young to be Parent. Flyers/Parent won BB titles in late 70s with Clarke/Clement Broad Street Bullies. I BELIEVE the Conferences were aligned differently back then, which would allow PHI to play versus the Islanders in Stanley Cup final. PRETTY SURE the Islanders beat the Flyers. That has to be young Swedish GK Lindbergh. Sadly, he would perish in a car accident not long after this photo.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

#1266Roscoe, you're going to hate me. I'm not going to look any of this up, feel like that would be cheating.

#1278OK, I figured out the Flyers goalie. It has to be Pete Peeters.
My logic was off there:
*Hextall was later. And I had never seen him without the moustache.
*And Pelle Lindbergh was also later. As I said, he played briefly and then died in the accident.
Some interesting ties to the 1980 Olympic hockey:
*Jari Kurri played for Finland. Who knew he would score 600+ goals?
*Lindbergh was goalie for Sweden. Was leading USA 2-1 before conceding the late goal.
*I'm still amazed that Ken Morrow was good enough to win the Gold for Team USA. Just months later, he transitioned to NHL and joined the Islander team that won the (first) Stanley Cup.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

#1279What COULD have been? Walton wanted to play for his hometown team after contract dispute in Portland.
The string of Walton injuries was LENGTHY. It's amazing how SHARP Walton's pro peak really was. He was truly healthy for only 1.5 seasons. Blazers got off to 50-12 start, looked like they were going to repeat in 1978. Then the injury hit again.
Start the discussion of best college players from L60 years. Alcindor has to be at the top. Jerry Lucas has to be in there. But Walton is in there, too. Combination of Scoring efficiency, Rebounding and Passing made him pretty awesome.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

#1285KLC, I'm really going down the rabbit hole on these OLD games. I'm now convinced these older games were the best.
The modern games? Please:
1) Top MLB starting pitchers earn close to $1Mill per start.
2) Have to bet an NBA star to suit up for a road game in Cleveland.
3) Top NBA qb makes $3Mill per start, and Goodell legislated contact out of the game.

#1286A hobbled Kareem comes back to score game-winner in Game 5. He leaves the stadium on crutches, doesn't make the flight back east.
Magic in Game 6, wow! How many rookies could turn in that performance?Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -
