Rudy do golf balls really get "outdated"

One would certainly consider the balata ball as outdated. I remember in the 1990's all the low handicappers used them, and they were the choice of almost every pro. I only used them sparingly, as I was a hack who was shooting high 80's to mid 90's so I'd cut those things up rather quickly, but everyone I played with that shot in the 70's swore by them cause of their softer feel and control. But now with more resilient covers that don't get cut up, but give the control, spin rates, and feel the low handicapper needs, the balata ball has gone the way of the dodo bird.
