I think it's because people live in their own little bubble and associate with people who mostly agree with their own views. Especially online.
If you are born into a liberal family or in a city surrounded by liberals, you are more likely to be liberal. Same with conservatism. There are people on both sides who are intelligent, they just have different viewpoints of how things should be governed.

Do you really think that Obama, Trump, Bernie Sanders, etc hate this country? I don't agree with Trump on a lot of issues, but I side with him on the media. It's a deceptive statistic no doubt. It is, in fact, based on the % federal spending accounts for in a States GDP. So this includes military, government, security and social programs. If you look at States lime LA or MS you'll realize these are port and Gulf states with mostly rural agricultural economies and large minority populations, yet have multiple large student bodies at major universities. So it stands to reason that they'd have a large portion of their GDP attributed to academic aid, port security, military spending and social welfare as compared to what the sugar cane and cotton farmers produce for export.

New Mexico another example. Large government expenses for military and land use versus very small GDP due to lack of industry.

There is no correlation to blue vs red in terms of recipient of federal aid, only correlation to GDP of state as it pertains to what they export. Liken it to revenue sharing in the NFL...each team gets the same chunk based on a factor of TV, tickets and merchandising - it's the parity measure...but you're still going to have winners paying more than they get (Patriots- Minnesota) and losers receiving more than they pay (Browns- Mississippi) only because of what their industry can support or where their geographic needs require it. Has nothing to do with the management of the state.
