Coastal Carolina suspends cheerleaders after prostitution claim


Coastal Carolina has suspended its cheerleaders after the school's president received an anonymous letter, which alleged that members of the team participated in prostitution, purchasing alcohol for underage team members, and paying others to do their homework.

The cheerleaders were confronted by police at practice and taken in for questioning on Wednesday evening, per a report from WMBF.

Via WMBF:

According to the cheerleader, the team was met by police outside the HTC Center after practice, who called the names of individual team members, and took them to CCU’s police station for questioning. During the questioning, the cheerleader said police searched through their cell phones. She said officers then told them they could leave around 11 p.m., after telling them they did nothing wrong.

Despite no charges, the school's administration has removed the cheerleading team from its website. The squad has also been barred from participating in an upcoming national competition on April 4 while the investigation proceeds.

Some parents of the cheerleaders took to social media to express their displeasure with the school's decision.

</header>Conway, SC – The head cheerleading coach at Coastal Carolina University was arrested on a host of charges after she allegedly refused to exit her boyfriend’s truck after he ended the relationship. Elizabeth Hadley Appenzeller, 31, allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted a police officer while drunk after the break-up on Sunday afternoon.
Conway Police officers handcuffed the cheer coach and charged her with domestic violence, assault, public intoxication, and resisting arrest, the Daily Mail reports. Law enforcement documents maintain the South Carolina university cheerleading instructor admitted to hitting her former beau in the face and note that she refused to get out of the pickup truck after getting the bad news. Officers also claim that she became boisterous, used profanity, and kicked one of the arresting officers. The unhappy university instructor had to be physically restrained.
When law enforcement officers arrived, the woman was sitting in the bed of the pickup truck and the man claiming to be the victim was inside the cab. He told the responding officers when he tried to retrieve some belongings from the spirit leader’s home she got upset that he had not slept over the previous night, and then she refused to hop out of the truck so he could leave.
The now ex-significant other called for police assistance after the cheer instructor allegedly struck him inside the vehicle, Fox Newsreports. Elizabeth Appenzeller was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, according to Myrtle Beach Online. A $12,950 bond was set in the case. CCU has not issued an official comment about the arrest but did confirm Appenzeller is employed by the school.

Here’s a story you don’t read every day.
The entire Coastal Carolina cheerleading team has been suspended due to their alleged involvement in prostitution. This report comes to us via the Myrtle Beach television station WMBF. And it’s simply stunning.

“A cheerleader who spoke on the condition of anonymity said an investigator with the CCU Department of Public Safety came to their practice Wednesday night. The cheerleader said the investigator explained to the team an anonymous letter was mailed to school president David DeCenzo on March 7 alleging that team members were involved in “a long list of things,” including prostitution, purchasing alcohol for underage team members, and paying others to complete their homework assignments,” the report read.

This seems to be straight out of a Lifetime movie. Young women allegedly engaging in paid sexual behavior while moonlighting as representations of the school’s athletic program.
According to the report, the athletics section of the Coastal Carolina website has removed all bios and photos of the school’s cheerleaders, instead replacing that with a link back to its spirit page.
Family members of those suspended by the school have since taken to social media to air their grievances with this decision.
