Mackey, Winslow, Witten, Tony G, Ditka. It's tough. Sharpe was great. Gronk could end up the greatest. It depends how you look at it. Generation, blocking, catching, numbers, etc. It's not clear cut at all.

Good call. Tough to decide. You have guys like Smith, Smith, Sanders too. I think it's Tony G. He did it all. I haven't seen enough of the old guys besides clips, and stats to know.

Actually Richard Caster of the Jets pre-dated all of them as probably the first mainly pass catching tight end. He just was not as successful long term as Winslow and Newsome.

Jerry Smith was 1965-77 and retired as the all time touchdown leader for tight ends with 60.

He is still 4th all time 40 years later behind Gonzalez with 111, Gates with 94 and Sharpe with 62.

Winslow revolutionized the position, he was the first modern day prototypical tight end. Will never forget his playoff game in the stifling heat in Miami.

I remember the Dolphins players making fun of him for not being able to walk off the field on his own. They were right.

He played an amazing game, but the guy was a little dramatic at times.
