Official asks Texas Rangers to help find lost Brady jersey

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is asking the state's top law enforcement officers to help locate Tom Brady's missing game jersey, which disappeared from the New England Patriots' locker room after the Super Bowl.

The Republican said in a statement Monday that Brady's jersey "was stolen" after the Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 at Houston's NRG Stadium, and that city police were already investigating.

Patrick said Texas places "a very high value on hospitality and football," adding: "It is important that history does not record" that Brady's jersey was stolen in the state.

He continued: "Whoever took this jersey should turn it in" since the "Texas Rangers are on the trail."
Brady said after the game that the jersey was missing and joked that he expects to see it soon in an online auction.

But there’s another key piece of memorabilia that a star player from the game can’t find: running back James White, who set a Super Bowl record with 14 catches in the game and had three touchdowns, told the Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday that he doesn’t know where the football he scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime with is now.

“Actually, I don’t know what I did with the football,” White told Patrick. “I left in on the ground and started running…hopefully Dave (Schoenfeld, the Patriots’ head equipment manager) has that for me in the equipment room.”

When Patrick jokingly chastised White saying, “James, you’re supposed to save that stuff!”, the third-year back just laughed.

“I wasn’t thinking in that moment, I was too busy sprinting down the field,” White said.

The Smithsonian Channel created a show last year called “Sports Detectives.” It chronicles private investigator Kevin Barrows and sports reporter Lauren Gardner as they try to track down some of the great pieces of sports memorabilia.

Episodes include searches for items such as the 1960 Olympic boxing gold medal won by Muhammad Ali; the flag that was draped around goaltender Jim Craig after the United States captured the “Miracle on Ice” gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics; the ball that went through the basket for the 100th point in the NBA record-setting game by Wilt Chamberlain and the saddle of Triple Crown winner Secretariat.
Well, thanks to the New England Patriots, “Sports Detectives” has a few more mysteries to examine.

The Patriots maybe one of the great dynasties in sports but they seem to have a habit of misplacing some championship memorabilia.

Sunday’s victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI provides two such incidents.
After running back James White scored the touchdown in overtime to complete New England’s miracle comeback, he forgot to hold on to the historic football that ended the first Super Bowl to go into overtime.
During the ensuing celebration, White lost track of it.
“I actually don’t know what I did with it,” White said on The Dan Patrick radio show. “I left it on the ground and started running.”

White said he hopes a teammate or Patriots staff member picked up the ball.
Odds are that at some point New England will produce a football. Whether it will be the “actual” football might be up for debate.
Another piece of history that went missing on Sunday was the jersey Tom Brady wore when he became the first quarterback to win five Super Bowls.

This is a bit more nefarious because Brady swears he had the historic No. 12 shirt and personally put it in his travel bag that was in his stall in the Patriots’ locker room.
This is confounding because Yahoo Sports has video of Brady arriving in a golf cart and entering a locker room that was closed.
Brady said the jersey was on his shoulder pads at his locker. He said he put the jersey in his travel bag and the shoulder pads in his equipment bag.

A little more than 10 minutes after Brady entered; the locker room was opened to the media.
Since Brady had already done his interview in a separate room, there were no media interviews at his locker.
Less than five minutes later, there is video of a confused Brady searching for his jersey. The shoulder pads are in his equipment bag.

“I put it right here,” Brady said. “I know exactly where I put it. This is crazy. I know it was in here.”
Brady yells out “Did anyone see it?” He asks an equipment manager if someone took it out.
“I absolutely, 100 percent put it in my bag,” he tells an equipment manager who was dispatched to search for it.
Early estimates of the value of Brady’s jersey are around $500,000. It might be priceless to him as it represents him passing his boyhood idol Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49ers and Terry Bradshaw of the Pittsburgh Steelers with five Super Bowl wins.

“If someone sees a jersey for sale on Ebay,” a distraught Brady quips.
The Houston police department said the disappearance of Brady’s jersey is being handled by its major offenders division but so far has no leads.

Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft doesn’t need any leads to know what happened to his $25,000 Super Bowl XXXIX championship ring.

Getting it back, however, might be a tougher task than the 12th labor of Hercules, which required the demi-god of Greek mythology to descend into the underworld and kidnap the guardian of its gate – Cerberus, a horrific creature with three heads of wild dogs, a dragon for a tail and heads of snakes covering his back.

The ring is from the Super Bowl in 2004, when the Patriots beat the Eagles.
In 2005 while on a business trip to Russia, Kraft met Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At a press conference, Kraft let Putin try on his diamond-encrusted Super Bowl ring. The Russian strongman decided it was a gift from Kraft and kept it.


For diplomatic reasons, the administration of President George W. Bush reportedly asked Kraft to not make a fuss and make it look like it was a present to Putin, which it was not.

Kraft said during the Super Bowl weekend that he now hopes that President Donald Trump, who is open to a friendlier relationship, will convince Putin to give the ring back.

Kraft has said he is willing to have a ring made with Putin’s name on it in exchange for the one with his name.
“I have an emotional tie to it,” Kraft said.

A Patriots’ championship ball, jersey and ring could all be a case for Sports Detectives.
