defensive penalties stop the clock and move the ball forward.
they can also be rejected by the offense.

Fair question. I don't think I have ever seen a defense do that before, although the Ravens OFFENSE did it earlier this year to end the game. OP's scenario makes sense too as Clemson would have kicked FG on untimed down.

If Alabama did this and 0:00 was left they would be forced to kick a FG on the untimed down. Good thought here as worst case is now OT with best case being missed FG.

surprising you'd think Saban would at least realise that.

Interesting thought. I assume this situation isn't thought of much especially amid the chaos. They were hoping to stop them, and maybe even have the clock run out if Clemson fcked up.

Also, imagine if you all hold but one guy fcks up and it's a free play anyway. So, throw it up and have a chance of a TD.

Never seen it other than what the ravens did. May catch on, but its so rare a situation for it comes up that teams might never consider it.

If everybody was holding somebody, who is gonna tackle Watson? With the play Clemson ran, no way holding everybody woulda worked. The D line wasn't going to catch him and if the receivers are all being held he walks into the end zone.

You'd have 11 defenders responsible for 6 guys, no need to hold the offensive line. Put 2 spies on Watson.

                            Two reasons.

                            1. Saban has more integrity than that

                            2. Saban thought he could get the stop
