I'm still not convinced that it wouldn't work in hockey. The problem with that video was that the shooter could shoot from a standstill. A more realistic example would be if he was skating in to the net as he shot. He would find it much harder to be accurate under these circumstances, and the sumo wrestler would do better in goal.

The thing most people in this thread don't seem to realize is that goalies only take up most of the net from the angle of the shot because they move around so well. In other words if you're watching hockey from an outside perspective, you see a bunch of empty net, right? In fact, even if you're on the ice watching the play, you still see a lot of empty net. Even if you have the puck, you'll see a bunch of net around the goalie's shoulders and legs. But the truth is that if you got on your belly and looked at the view from the puck's perspective, there is almost no free space in the upper parts of the net (so a fat goalie does nothing) and the most space is actually in the lowest foot of the net (good luck finding a guy with 3 foot wide ankles). So the truth is that you're much better with a more agile goalie who is tall enough not to get shots over his shoulders when he's on his knees (but not so tall that the hole between his legs is huge) and agile enough to get into position for every shot. The prototypical goalie body is in the 6'-6'3" range and wiry. Think Marc-André Fleury and Ryan Miller - tall guys, yes, but in the 180lbs range, and if you saw them with their shirts off you'd think they were scrawny little dudes. The pads add the bulk for almost no cost in weight. To add volume to the goalie by adding 40lbs of fat would absolutely destroy their foot quickness and ability to slide around side to side. Bigger, heavier goalies have to play more positionally because they aren't as quick (think JS Giguere in his prime), while smaller guys have the speed (and the need) to move around more for every save.Equipment isn't really the reason, I'm not sure why the top comment is about equipment. If a player physically needs equipment beyond the scope of the rules, it's evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Example: Zdeno Chara's stick is longer than the league maximum because he's 6'9" and actually needs it that long just to be able to stand normally and play. If a goalie actually had 14" wide shin bones I'm sure he'd get to use wider pads, but if he were that big he'd be useless because he would have absolutely no side-to-side mobility. Every shot would be in off the post 6 inches off the ice because he couldn't get there fast enough.
