All thoughout the year across the globe. US is too isolated when it comes to showing most of these sports on TV. And that's why the general public has no clue.

I get the winter sports. Scandinavian countries like skiing, that sport where you ski and rifle is bad ass. I don't get how people swimming laps in a pool or watching some brontosaurus lift 600lbs over his head can have national allure. Even the track & field events are boring outside a handful of them...and I use to run track

Weightlifting is fun. I love watching the bar buckle under all the weight. Some guys can lift 3 times their own weight over their heads.

Yeah the biathlon is pretty bad ass...in Europe they show it starting Dec all the way to the end of Feb - Different world cups in different countries. Same goes for skiing.
The track and field is alright...but I do agree with you about the swimming - there is really not much to see there.

Volleyball and Handball are also fun to watch...especially the women's teams. I also like Water Polo.
