The obvious reason is that the payroll is way too broad. How many "experts" can u pay?

It's also clear that they're giving out jobs so they can expand viewership to minorities/females. U don't do that, at the expense of reduced quality.

ESPN still a cash cow rolling in money.

Just not making the obscene $ they made for years off the cable companies with their unique double dip setup (paid to be carried on cable system + their ad revenue)... that the NFL Network tried, but failed, to get; cable companies held firm and swore no one would ever get ESPN's deal again. With various companies removing ESPN from their basic package(and peeps dumping cable for other alternatives)... ESPN's revenue has obviously dipped last few years. So, to maintain the oodles of $ management still wants to make... slash and burn time for the high-salaried talent.

ESPN does seems to think they can replace the 1st stringers with some bench riding scrubeenies, tho, and not miss much of a beat. Time will tell how much that philosophy hurts them (or not). They'll still be making major coin for years to come any way you cut it, tho.
