They're just paying for past performance, what poor sports franchise's do. Example, Albert Pujols. One of the best franchise in all of sports, St Louis Cardinals, got everything out of his prime, when it was time for the next big paycheck, to a then declining player, they smartly declined. Angels shell him multiple millions, for a declining superstar and wont sniff the playoffs with him, or the next 5 years after him. Not like St Louis, whos a title contender every year.
