I'll give you a real life example of the hook in action. Myself and two friends all bet a college football game a few years back, I think it was Oklahoma St. @ Texas Tech or something like that. One friend bet it early at -3.5, my other friend bet it right before kickoff like I did and it had moved to -3. I unlike my two buddies bought the half point though, -2.5. They won by a FG in OT. So needless to say that hook was extremely important in the outcome of our three bets. One dude lost cause of the hook, other dude pushed and I won cause I bought the half point.
