Pretty easy signup, even if you are on a TMobile prepaid plan. Walmart has a $30/mo prepaid that you can purchase for 1 month then cancel.

Prepaid works. Make sure you're on the Tmobile phone when you sign up. Not wifi.

What kind of phone do you have? Are you sure you are on the TMobile network and NOT on your home Wifi?
