I have Nyquist at 10/1 risking 300, suddenbreakingnews at 40/1 for 100, and Cupid and whitmore at 40/1 for 75 each to win the derby. Had a nickel on Nyquist's nose to win Saturday so I'm free rolling my futures bets. I don't bet horses a lot but have had great success calling the derby winner early recently. Sent an email to five friends I work with who all play horses (we have a small track about 20 minutes from my town) when I happened to be watching Nyquist's maiden 6 furlong race last summer. I told them I had my derby horse. Did the same with Pharoah after watching him break his maiden and with chrome and orb, although not as early as I called Pharoah and hopefully now Nyquist. I hope the Florida Derby didn't take too much out of him, but I think he could be special. Time to make money off him may be over though unless you hit a Tri or super at the derby. Last year I played Pharoah in the first futures pool at 12/1 and had two bills on a lovely Maria-Pharoah oaks-derby double that paid a little over 26/1. The triple crown season is definitely a fun time if you like the ponies. JJ is right, though, anyone who plays them a lot will always come out behind. Good luck.

It's funny, I literally go to the track about 6-7 times a year. Usually triple crown and breeders cup and a couple of other days when they have live racing to drink beers and make a few bets with college friends. I'm over 40 now, and several of us used to go every Friday night when Hollywood Park was in season and had the late post time. That was more than 15 years ago and I still see some of the same fuckers at the track that are there probably 300 days a year at least that I saw in college choking on their camels, playing every track, and yelling like crazy for horses that rarely get there. Soemetimes I take my wife and we just laugh our asses off at them while I buy one form, play one track and stay diciplined. Hard core Horse players are some of the most compulsive gamblers alive.

This is not uncommon, whether at the track or OTB. That was also the case before full card simo when one could only bet the live track.
