No games worth a damn being played, unless you're a fan of one of the teams. Only one game on a major network. All these games being on cable channels subliminally make them lose their luster. Would have enjoyed the playoff games being played today, instead of on New Year's Eve when a lot of people want to party.

#3The College Football Playoff committee raised some eyebrows when it moved the semifinals from New Year's Day to New Year's Eve, and that risk ultimately didn't pay off from a ratings perspective.
According to John Ourand of SportsBusiness Journal, the Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl drew ratings of 9.9 and 9.7 respectively, down significantly from last season:

#9It's retarded how the entire playoff schedule has to bow to the Rose Bowl. When the Rose Bowl hosts a semi-final, we get a New Year's Day final 4, which is how it should be. But on those years where the Rose Bowl is not a semi-final, they move the playoffs to New Year's Eve.
It's retarded how the Rose Bowl has more sway than the playoffs, and it's retarded how they moved it to New Year's Eve instead of January 2nd. The current schedule calls for this for the next 10 years so unless they change anything, we better get used to it.Comment -

#10Nothing like giving the 2nd best (debatable) Big 10 team, and a team for a conference that couldn't even make the playoffs top billing.Comment -

#18Bottom line - Waaay too many meaningless bowls! 5-7 teams playing in empty stadiums - just brutal! Simple solution: Expand the playoff to 8 or even 16 teams and use the shit bowls for these games. Interest will be increased as well as attendance. Yea, I know - that solution is too simple for the powers that be in college football...Comment -

#20Exactly. Only CFB can mess this up. They don't play a bunch of games after the CBB final four. The semi-finals should be the pinnacle of the season, not treated as an afterthought. Ratings down 40% proved that also.Originally posted by TheMoneyShotWhy not just have the playoff games on Saturday January 2?Comment -

#21There must be logistical reasons why they couldn't play these semifinal games on January 2nd.
If all of us can figure out it was stupid to play them on New Years Eve, there must have been a reason.Comment -

#23They (probably ESPN) wanted to start playing the semifinals on NYE as a new tradition. The only traditions in CFB is the rose bowl and trying to bilk more money from its fans.Originally posted by The GiantThere must be logistical reasons why they couldn't play these semifinal games on January 2nd.

#24Well, if that's the case, that's just idiotic. Those games didn't even feel like playoff games. They had more of a feel of a meaningless bowl game.Originally posted by RockBottomThey (probably ESPN) wanted to start playing the semifinals on NYE as a new tradition. #27The Rose Bowl has become a joke. With the Playoff system in place we are basically watching the 2nd place Pac 12 and Big 10 teams play each other. The results point out that the Big 10 is brutal......apologies to Ohio State and a pat on the back to Michigan. Iowa was just terrible, Northwestern worse.Comment
